Second lecture

Let’s start with a quick definition of Gestalt Principles :

Gestalt Principles are principles/laws of human perception that describe how humans group similar elements, recognize patterns and simplify complex images when we perceive objects. Designers use the principles to organize content on websites and other interfaces so it is pleasing and easy to understand. (https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/topics/gestalt-principles)

Let’s discover application of those laws that went wrong !

The non-erasable pen :

I want to take an example, non digital, but depicting the association the brain does easily. Imagine a teacher arriving to his class. His white bord is clean but he doesn’t have a pen. His students are already there waiting. He found one in his office. He sees that it is not the same brand and packaging as usual but he has to start !

I have a white board and a black pen, what could go wrong ? The association is obvious !

I am pretty sure every student faced this situation when a teacher realises the pen can’t be erased. Himself knew the risk, there is nothing new. However, the association has been made automatically in his head and the mistake is done !

A second one :

I actually had much difficulty to find one more, because we actually face very few examples of this in our daily life. I will write about the following picture :

First of all, the picture has style !

Moreover, we clearly see the law of good figure. Here, dispite the white and dark different, we see clearly a man walking. Actually, the top and the bottom of the picture could have nothing to share, it would be the same in our perception. Our first look make us see a black man because our brain interpret what information he has and deduce the rest of it.
